Effect of Hydrogen on the Mechanical Properties of ASTM A182 F22 and ASTM A36 Steels Welded Joint Using Inconel 625 as Filler and Buttering Metal

ASTM A 182 F22 steel, used in components subsea for oil extraction, are previously buttered with ductile metal such as Inconel 625, before being welded to steel pipes similar A36 steels. The thermal buttering weld cycle provides the formation of high hardness micro-phases and carbides at interface between Inconel, which when contact hydrogen, originating from cathodic protection applied these equipment, can lead embrittlement this region, causing fragile fractures. In work, 625 submitted post-weld heat treatment without hydrogenation subjected hydrogen permeation were fracture toughness test. welds done using GMAW process AWS ERNiCrMo-3 wire filler a mixture Ar He shield gas. results indicated 56% area reduction, 15% elongation values tensile tests, addition 13.3% reduction CTOD value, joints permeation, showed quasi-cleavage mechanism.
